Dutch continuous cab system displaying speed limits via track AC currents with automatic brake enforcement.
Intermediate
Based on vigilance required, reaction window, and braking penalty severity.
menu_book System Overview
ATB (specifically ATB-EG and ATB-NG) is the primary safety system used throughout the Dutch railway network (Nederlandse Spoorwegen). It transmits frequency-coded pulses through the running rails into receiver coils in the locomotive.
settings How It Operates
- check_circle Cab indicators display the permitted maximum speed (typically 40, 60, 80, 130, or 140 km/h).
- check_circle When entering a block with a lower speed limit, a loud bell or gong rings in the cab.
- check_circle The driver must immediately initiate braking and decrease speed below the target within a strict time window.
- check_circle If the driver does not apply sufficient braking power within 3 seconds, emergency brakes apply automatically.
visibility In-Cab Visual & Audio Indications
Illuminated numbers: 40, 60, 80, 130, 140 on the driver desk.
High-pitched gong or buzzer sounds whenever permitted speed drops.
lightbulb Driver Tips to Avoid Penalty Brakes
- verified React promptly to the gong sound; ATB gives very little tolerance before enforcing penalty brakes.
