KVB
Contrôle de Vitesse par Balises
French balise-based speed control system monitoring track speed limits and signal obedience.
Intermediate
Based on vigilance required, reaction window, and braking penalty severity.
menu_book System Overview
KVB is the workhorse safety system across the classic SNCF network in France. Positioned between the rails, square track transponders (balises) calculate deceleration curves matching line limits, temporary speed restrictions, and signals at danger.
settings How It Operates
- check_circle Interrogates trackside balises to receive line speed profiles, upcoming signal aspects, and gradient data.
- check_circle Displays permitted target speed on digital segment indicators in the cab.
- check_circle If the train speed exceeds the target plus margin, an acoustic beep warns the driver.
- check_circle Failing to brake within the calculated deceleration window prompts an automatic emergency brake intervention.
visibility In-Cab Visual & Audio Indications
Three digital displays showing target speed, current speed, and system status.
Audible chime sounds when crossing a restrictive balise or exceeding permitted margin.
lightbulb Driver Tips to Avoid Penalty Brakes
- verified Watch your deceleration curves closely; KVB calculates braking distance strictly based on train mass and gradient.
- verified Look for the yellow KVB balises between the rails approaching stations and junction signals.
