LZB
Linienzugbeeinflussung
Continuous in-cab signaling cable loop for high-speed running above 160 km/h (up to 300+ km/h).
Intermediate
Based on vigilance required, reaction window, and braking penalty severity.
menu_book System Overview
LZB is Germany and Austria's premier high-speed signaling system, utilized on high-speed lines like Kassel - Würzburg and Schnellfahrstrecke Köln - Aachen. A cable loop laid between the rails provides uninterrupted bidirectional telemetry between lineside computers and the train.
settings How It Operates
- check_circle Allows safe train separation up to 10 km ahead without relying on physical trackside signals.
- check_circle Continuous telemetry transmits target speed (Zielgeschwindigkeit) and target distance (Zielentfernung) straight to the cab dashboard.
- check_circle If the target speed drops, LZB displays a dynamic braking curve on the circular speedometer. If the driver fails to brake, LZB automatically intervenes.
- check_circle Can operate alongside AFB (cruise control) to automatically adjust speed according to signaling limits.
visibility In-Cab Visual & Audio Indications
Shows current speed, target speed bug, and maximum permissible ceiling.
Visual bar or digital readout showing meters remaining to the next restriction (up to 9,900m).
"Ü" indicates active LZB transmission; "Ende" flashes when preparing to return to standard PZB visual signaling.
lightbulb Driver Tips to Avoid Penalty Brakes
- verified When LZB is active, obey your in-cab display rather than trackside signals; physical signals are dark or overridden.
- verified Pay close attention when the yellow "ENDE" lamp starts flashing: you must acknowledge it within 10 seconds or face an emergency brake stop before entering PZB territory.
